Devon

“You see anything?” I shouted to Gabe.

The screams started less than five minutes ago and were quickly followed by chaos. There had been gunshots, then a mass exodus, but we still had no idea what we were facing. It could be anything. Hostiles from outside the wall who’d managed to get inside, zombies, or even a fight between a few of our own people. Whatever it was, it had caused panic, and with everyone running around the way they were, figuring out what had happened was nearly impossible.

“Devon!”

I turned toward the sound of my name and spotted Kiaya through the crowd. She stood on the counter of one of the booths, waving her arm to get my attention. I returned the gesture to let her know I’d seen her, and she pointed to the other side of the square then hopped down. She was swallowed by the crowd in seconds.

“This way!” I called to Gabe and started moving.

Thankfully, I was bigger than most people, because I had to push my way through. Men and women cursed at me, stumbled, and one even fell to the ground with a panicked cry, but I didn’t stop. I was too focused on my goal. Since we were moving toward danger while everyone else was running away, Gabe and I managed to make it to the other side of the crowd within seconds. Kiaya pushed her way through a few feet away from us seconds later.

Escaping the chaos was a relief, but the feeling was short lived.

“Shit,” I said.

A man lay sprawled on the ground, staring up at me with lifeless brown eyes. His throat was a jagged bloody mess, and a dark red pool shimmered on the pavement beneath him. A second body lay beside him, only this one wasn’t a man. Or at least he hadn’t been when he’d met his end. His gray skin told me that much.

“Is that Morgan?” Gabe asked.

I’d been so focused on the blood I hadn’t looked at the zombie’s face, but with a start, I realized Gabe was right. Which made no sense, because as far as I knew, Morgan was on a scavenging mission and not due back for days.

“I didn’t even know he was back.”

I knelt at the zombie’s side, my lips pursed as I looked the body over. Morgan had a bullet hole in the side of his head, which accounted for the gunshot I’d heard earlier, but he’d turned at some point—although I wasn’t sure when—and his red-stained teeth and the blood under his nails made it clear he’d been responsible for ripping out the other guy’s throat. It was the patch of red on his shirt that drew most of my attention, though.

I pushed the fabric aside, letting out a grunt a of annoyance at the sight of the bite on his stomach. He’d tried to bandage it, but the tape had come free—probably during his struggle with the man—and the gauze was now barely hanging on.

“Son of a bitch,” Gabe said.
